On Tuesday 13th March we went to Warwick castle. We had a really great day learning about castles and what life used to be like in them. We walked round the Horrible Histories maze and learnt about different periods of history. We looked around the Great Hall and learnt about what life used to be like in the castle. We saw armour, weapons and how the rooms in the castle used to be set out. After lunch we watched a birds of prey show. We saw some different types of birds including eagles and red kites. We learnt about what they eat and how they fly. Later we walked up the ramparts, castle walls and towers. We had to climb lots of steps!!

As part of Science week, we had a focus on Materials. We tried to break a Guinness World record of the longest span bridge built in 3 minutes. We had to work as a team to decide how to construct our bridge, how to make it strong and which bricks to build. We had lots of fun!

In English we read the story of the Gingerbread Man. We retold it using actions and words then created story maps. We changed the characters in the story and wrote new stories. Some of the titles were 'The doughnut Man' and 'The Muffin Man'.
In Theme, we baked some Gingerbread Men then we wrote instructions on how to make them. We read the story of The Three Little Pigs. We investigated different materials and thought about which might be the best for building a new house for them. In groups, we each had to use a different material to build a new house for the three little pigs. We tested them by blowing a hairdryer on them to see if they fell down. We found the houses made from plastic were the strongest.
Since returning in January, we have been learning about money in maths. We began by identifying coins and notes, adding pounds and pence and selecting coins and notes to create amounts and make totals. Here are some links to games you could play at home to help your child.

Last week we launched our new theme. When we arrived at school on Monday there were some strange green sparkly footprints outside our classroom. We followed them into class. They led to a letter and a D-Mail box. The letter was from The Friendly Dragon to tell us that Fairytale Land had been destroyed and he needed our help to rebuild it. Of course we couldn't wait to help! We spent the afternoon transforming our room into Fairytale land. We hope the Friendly Dragon likes it. We created an enchanted forest, a gingerbread cottage, a castle entrance and a royal reading area. We also created maps of what we think Fairytale land looks like. We can't wait to learn more about Fairytale land and everyone who lives there! As part of our English we have been creating news reports and we will be writing newspaper articles about Fairytale lands destruction. In Theme we have been talking about our everyday heroes such as police officers, paramedics, doctors, nurses, firefighters, taxi drivers, mechanics, teachers, lifeguards, our families and famous heroes. We thought about the qualities of our heroes and how they inspire us.
This week we had a visit from Gemma and Jordan, two local Police Community Support Workers. They told us about their jobs, the uniform they have to wear and we even go to sit in the police car! They put the siren on, it was really loud! We think they are heroes because they are kind, brave, strong and they help people. We really enjoyed their visit. In Maths we have been doing lots of work on place value. We have been learning how to use dienes and place value counters to make two-digit numbers. We have also been working on our reasoning skills and explaining how we found an answer and how we know an answer is correct.
This week we have been learning how to use the greater than > and less than < signs to compare numbers. |
